Multiple Airbags & Electronics Increase Repair Costs
Three years ago, the average vehicle had two airbags. Today, vehicles can be equipped with as many as six airbags. Replacing a supplement restraint airbag system can cost $2,000 to $8,000 depending on accident severity.

Factors driving fleet claim severity costs in 2005 include:

  • Increased number of airbags
  • increased use of electronics
  • Frequent increase in parts prices
  • Increased price of commodities
  • OEM sales of parts “assemblies”
  • Increased use of expensive plastic components
